A Merry Heart Heals Like a Good Medicine
We all want to feel well, to know success and experience joy and serenity. However, the circumstances and problems we encounter can result in behavior harmful to a successful and harmonious life.
Every aspect of life is affected by our pain and how we deal with the challenges we encounter. Discouragement can have a negative impact on relationships, jobs, emotions, finances, spiritual well-being and health in general. When an individual struggles with alcohol or drug abuse, their use will have a destructive impact on self-esteem, family, relationships, occupation, finances and health. The problems we encounter can seem impossible to solve and often lead to loss of hope and a sense of failure and helplessness.
One of my favorite quotes addresses how our attitude impacts our lives: “A merry heart heals like a good medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” If you struggle with anger, substance abuse, and emotional pain or behave in ways that create problems in your life, you understand the meaning of helplessness, loss of hope and despair. You also understand that a broken spirit dries the bones - or can make you ill.
We are positive and holistic in our approach to helping. We believe in focusing on the whole person and the strengths and potential each individual brings to therapy. We encourage our client to learn skills that can be useful in coping with issues and problem solving. We believe that a cornerstone of wellness is learning problem solving skills.
Someone once said: "Give a person a fish in the morning and they will eat well for the rest of the day. Teach that same person to catch a fish and they will be able to feed themselves for life."
Scott Peck, a psychiatrist, got to the heart of the matter in his book, The Road Less Traveled. Peck observed that, “Life is difficult.”He goes on to say that while most people would like to change something about their lives, most would prefer to avoid the discomfort that grows out of changing. We generally prefer to avoid the consequences of our behavior. When this occurs the problems we face become even more deeply rooted. Learning new skills and behaving in new ways is not easy. It requires work and ongoing personal responsibility. However it is the path to increased well-being and a merry heart that heals like a medicine.
