                         ANSWER SHEET 1 d; 2 b; 3 a; 4 b; 5 c; 6 d; 7 c; 8 d; 9 a; 10 d; 11 d; 12 a; 13 d; 14 d; 15 d

1. Correct Answer: “d”

Alcohol has many forms but Ethyl alcohol, or Ethanol, is used in beverages. Methyl, or wood alcohol, is highly toxic. Isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol is highly toxic and inhalation of vapors irritates the respiratory tract, produces symptoms of dizziness, drowsiness, headache, staggering, unconsciousness and possibly death.

2. Correct Answer: “b”

When alcohol is consumed the body begins to metabolize and process the alcohol. In the early stages alcohol is broken down into acetaldehyde, which is a chemical highly toxic and poisonous to the body. Alcohol is eventually metabolizes, or broken down, into acetic acid which is then oxidized and used by the body as energy.

3. Correct answer: “a”

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. Most people believe it stimulates because they feel stimulated by the loss of inhibitions that result when the brain's higher learning centers are depressed or impaired. Like any other depressant drug, as the dosage increases the depressant action on the brain and the central nervous system increases. Heavy drinking reaches dangerous levels as the individual finds it increasingly difficult to assess the effects of the alcohol. Eventually, if the heavy drinking pattern is continued, the depressant action will induce sleep. In some cases, alcohol has depressed the central nervous system to the extreme point where vital life functions such as breathing and heart beat have been endangered resulting in coma and death.

4. Correct Answer: “b”

“BAC” refers to Blood Alcohol Concentration. The BAC increases at the approximate rate of .02% for each 12 oz can of beer, 4 oz glass of wine or 2 oz shot of whiskey. On average, alcohol affects women more rapidly than men.

5. Correct answer: “c”

The liver is the organ that plays a major role in metabolizing alcohol in the body. The liver is the organ that chronic, heavy alcohol consumption destroys. As the extent of liver damage increases over time, it takes less alcohol to become intoxicated because the liver is less able to detoxify alcohol in the blood.

6. Correct answer: “d”

7. Correct answer: “c”

The body detoxifies itself from alcohol at the rate of approximately .02% each hour, or the approximate amount of alcohol in one 12 oz can of beer or one 4 oz glass of wine.

8. Correct answer: “d”

Alcohol goes directly to the bloodstream, which is why it affects every system in the body. Excessive drinking can decrease the amount of testosterone in a man's body and cause impotence. Alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine, and less rapidly from the stomach and colon.

9.  Correct answer: “a”

An 8oz glass of wine, or 4 oz glass of vodka, contains approximately two times the amount of alcohol as a 12 oz can of beer. The peak Blood Alcohol Level occurs 60 to 90 minutes after ingestion when the stomach is empty. The presence of food in the stomach slows the rate of alcohol absorption. However the amount of alcohol absorbed remains unchanged. About 20 to 40 minutes are required for all the alcoholic content of a drink to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Since the body oxidizes the alcohol at a fixed rate the blood alcohol level or concentration may continue to rise even after drinking stops.

10. Correct answer: “d”

Babies born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have: smaller heads and brains, some degree of mental retardation, poor coordination, hyperactivity and abnormal facial features. 10% of alcohol health care costs are for care of fetal alcohol syndrome. Women absorb alcohol into the bloodstream faster and metabolize it slower than men. Women who drink regularly are at significantly greater risk for liver damage than men even if they drink less or drink for a shorter period of time. Women develop alcoholic liver disease after a comparatively shorter period of heavy drinking and at a lower level of daily drinking than men. Proportionately more alcoholic women die from cirrhosis than do alcoholic men.

15. Correct answer: “d”

The odds of women experiencing sexual aggression were nine times higher on heavy days of alcohol consumption compared with days of no alcohol consumption. There is a greater incidence of alcohol misuse in women with eating disorders, especially bulimia, than in the general population.
